Bold in the Cold

That was me this morning when I ran my first 5K!!
It's actually titled "Bold in the Cold".
Not only was I Bold in the Cold, I was Bold in the Cold WITH a cold, and a nasty crick in my neck from sleeping strangely. I woke at 6:30 this morning to see if the race was even going to happen, and found that 33 degrees with a pretty decent chance of freezing rain means nothing to these people. The race was ON! Back to bed I went, rationalizing that, it may be still on, but I had a nasty cold, not to mention that I felt like someone had stuck a steel rod through my neck up into my brain. NO race for me. But as soon as I put those warm, comfy covers back on, I felt like a slacker. I kept thinking of what people would say if I told them I didn't do it, b/c it was cold, and I didn't feel good. Not to mention the fact that I would be completely disappointed in myself. And, honestly, for once, it was more for my own sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I leaped out of bed at the last minute to change and brush my teeth. I would not let myself back out this time.
The race started at 8 a.m., and I got there about 7:45. My cousin, Seth, was supposed to run with me, but he had to bail because of a "small group leaders' meeting". uh-huh. So, I was all by my lonesome self. And since I drove off with the carseat, Niles couldn't come and bring Reese to meet me at the finish line. That was probably the most disappointing factor of this entire morning. But, what can you do. I know he feels really bad.

So, I signed up, got my number, 607, and started stretching and wondering how many of these fanatics had been running daily for months in an effort to leave us first-timers heaving in our own dust. We lined up, and took off. It was bloody freezing. My hands were like ice and bright red. When I hit the half-mile mark, I was relieved. I knew I could make it. I realized at the turnaround point, when I saw the first batch of people passing us on their way to the finish line, that I wasn't doing too shabby. I was probably towards the front of the middle batch of people, and that was OK with me. My biggest goal was to actually run the entire way, and not come in last.

I DID IT! I ran the entire 3.2 miles, and my finishing time was 26:46!! That means around 8:50 for each mile. Only because of the .2, of course. SO, I am pretty pleased with myself. When I got home, Niles had made little posters for he and Reese to hold up for me. =) I really wish they could have been at the finish line. That definitely would have been a wonderful sight to see... But, hey, it's NOT my last 5K.

But it WAS my FIRST!!!!

Second Blog on a Friday Night?!

I know. Lame.
But, to satisfy my own fear of you thinking I'm a loser, we did get two phone invitations for dinner. SO there. l
I haven't been feeling good all week long, and after my insomnia-induced-Owen Meany-read-a-thon last night (read the following blog), I felt even crappier today.

I already blogged tonight, but I thought of something super-funny that Niles said the other night, and I just had to tell about it.
We were watching the Apprentice:Los Angeles, (A bit weird, and not like the normal Apprentice, not to mention sans Carolyn and George. So, I'm not sure about this season as of right now. Quit watching you say? I'm adaptable. It's one of my better qualities.) and this year, for a fun little twist, if your team loses the challenge, you sleep outside in tents. My husband was not getting the point of this, and in his defense, they did make it a little confusing by asking who the "voting public" should send to "Tentcity". I guess, meaning, that if you get kicked off you go to Tentcity, but if you lose you just spend a few nights "in a tent", but not in Tentcity.

Anyways, the funny thing was that Niles was trying to figure out what Tentcity was. So, at the commercial break, he said, "Oh, I get it. I think it means, 'You lose. You're broke... Go live in a tent.' "

Okay, so it was a heck of a lot funnier to the two of us, in the moment. We pretty much laughed at it all night long. Lucky for us that we get each other so much better than you do. =)

I'm supposed to run my first 5K tomorrow. But with this freakish winter storm, and possible freezing rain right about the start time for my race, it looks as if I may not be running. I'm sad! I was looking forward to it. I guess 5Ks aren't that uncommon... Plus, my devoted running buddy already bailed on me. Wuss.

Wow. So this is what happens when you sit and blog in front of your computer on a Friday night.

Owen Meany and One More Thing

I just finished A Prayer for Owen Meany last night. Thanks to a rough cold, and a week-long bout of insomnia, I read the last 150-plus pages of Owen last night, wrapping up around 3 a.m. I bawled. If you've read this amazing book, then you understand that throughout the entire book, you somewhat know the ending. But, it still doesn't prepare you. I felt like I'd lost a little piece of me! I have to admit, about halfway through, although I thoroughly loved the entire book, I was a bit frustrated with the length of time it was taking me to read. I have SO many books that I'm aching to read right now, that despite the quality of Owen, I was looking forward to getting to the last chapter and finally finding out what would happen. And now that I'm finished, I'm so disappointed that Owen Meany is not an actual human being in my world, and that it's all over. But it is. And now, it's back to the French Revolution I go. The Scarlet Pimpernel is the next book on my list. I've just gotten 4 pages in, and unfortunately, this is the hardest part of reading for me. I have a hard time getting myself hooked in the first chapter. I keep thinking maybe I should read something else. But, I'm committed. And, thankfully, this is the first book I've read in a long time, that is less than 500 pages. YAY! I had considered reading another book I got on the French Revolution called Citizens, but it is over 700 pages. And, I'm just not up for that right now. I'd like to get a few books knocked off before I tackle that. =) If I continue to follow my New Year's resolutions, I should be able to finish Scarlet Pimpernel in a week and a half!! Wish me luck!

One more thing?
THIS WEEKEND.
24.
JACK STINKIN' BAUER.

That's all.

My little girl's second month of life. (sigh).

Countdown to ONE!

My little Reese Monkey is turning one in less than a month! I just can't believe it. How much one's life can change and how much one's priorities, concerns, hopes, fears, dreams are wrapped up in this one tiny, little person... It is amazing.
I love my little girl so much. She is such a little miracle, and I truly see as her as God's gift. There's just no better way to say it.
So, in tribute to her upcoming birthday, here's a little peek into the last year of our life, and how she's grown... (Hopefully you don't think the labor picture is too graphic, i figured if I can handle it, than it can't be too bad)

At home, and totally Jaundiced! So, we had to put her in a "billy light box" for 3 or 4 days! It was so sad. She had to be strapped in and we couldn't hold her except for a few times a day, which, having a brand new baby, is very emotional and hard to do!

Yeah, baby!

SO, my Dallas Mavs are now on a 13 game winning streak! And better yet, we won that thirteenth game against the FREAKIN' SAN ANTONIO SPURS!
OH my word, are you kidding me!?!?!?
I'm so happy right now.

And, I'm a STUDENT!

IT'S OFFICIAL!!

I'M NOW A DBU Patriot!! (Patriot... what a mascot.)
I went to my appointment yesterday, just planning on having them look over my transcripts and tell me how much more work I have left to do. Well, I filled out the actual application at my advisor's desk, and she went to make a phone call. This was after she looked over my transcripts, and was trying to figure out what would transfer, etc. When she came back from her phone call, not five minutes later, she said "Congratulations, you've been accepted!" So, as of yesterday, I'm eligible to start registering! Classes start on the 16th! AND, to top it all off, I can finish my entire Psych degree ONLINE. The whole thing! It's more costly that way, but at least it makes it that much easier for me to finish! I have between 32-42 hours left. When you break it down to 10-13 classes left, that seems so easy!

Here's the only stinker. I have to take "Intro to Computers" and that ridiculous "Intro to College" class that all private (public??)schools see fit to force upon their students. How lame! I have another appointment on Monday, so I can find out exactly what classes I need to take still... So I'm going to ask if there's any possibility of testing out of the computer class.
It just sucks to have to pay so much money for two classes that mean absolutely nothing. =( Nothing except getting my degree, I suppose. =)

So, pat me on the back! I'm finally doing it!!
YAY ME!

It was Inevitable...

I'm referring to two things. One, my daughter has done it. She has grown a fondness for The Wiggles. oy.
Two, it's time to make my resolutions. Again... oy.
But it just has to be done, and it's for my own good, right?!

1. Read 30 - 50 pages a day... whatever book I'm trying to finish that month. Because another resolution is...
2. Finish at LEAST one book a month
3. Get in bed at 10!! (that's probably going to be the hardest.) Or at least turn off the TV at 10.
4. Maintain my workout routine (boot camp 3 to 4 times a week, running two other days a week)
5. Don't procrastinate so much. At least once a day, I will try to do something I have been putting off.
6. Get back in school. (My appt with DBU is today! I'm excited!)
7. Clean each room in my house for at least 5 minutes a day. (My biggest problem is clutter, so that oughta do it.)
8. Read my BIBLE!!! (I've been terrible about this for a long time!)
9. Cook more often. As in, cook... period. When we were in Florida, I cooked almost every night, and since Reese, I think I've cooked dinner once. Niles cooks for us all the time!! But I really want to get back into it. I really enjoy it, and this year, I want to spend time doing things that I actually enjoy... for myself.
10. End 2007 as a better, more well-rounded person, mother, wife, and friend.
11. Run a 5k every other month. (I'm not alone in this one. My cousin, Seth, is doing it with me. We're running our first one next Saturday. yikes.)
12. By the end of the year, I'd like to be able to run 6 miles with no trouble.
13. ALSO, I'd like to be able to run my mile in less than 8 minutes!!

I think that's probably all for now.
I'm sure I could go on and on, but why get overwhelmed!!

INFP? ME?? But it's so so true!!

Portrait of an INFP - Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving
(Introverted Feeling with Extraverted Intuition)

The Idealist

As an INFP, your primary mode of living is focused internally, where you deal with things according to how you feel about them, or how they fit into your personal value system. Your secondary mode is external, where you take things in primarily via your intuition.

INFPs, more than other iNtuitive Feeling types, are focused on making the world a better place for people. Their primary goal is to find out their meaning in life. What is their purpose? How can they best serve humanity in their lives? They are idealists and perfectionists, who drive themselves hard in their quest for achieving the goals they have identified for themselves

INFPs are highly intuitive about people. They rely heavily on their intuitions to guide them, and use their discoveries to constantly search for value in life. They are on a continuous mission to find the truth and meaning underlying things. Every encounter and every piece of knowledge gained gets sifted through the INFP's value system, and is evaluated to see if it has any potential to help the INFP define or refine their own path in life. The goal at the end of the path is always the same - the INFP is driven to help people and make the world a better place.

Generally thoughtful and considerate, INFPs are good listeners and put people at ease. Although they may be reserved in expressing emotion, they have a very deep well of caring and are genuinely interested in understanding people. This sincerity is sensed by others, making the INFP a valued friend and confidante. An INFP can be quite warm with people he or she knows well.

INFPs do not like conflict, and go to great lengths to avoid it. If they must face it, they will always approach it from the perspective of their feelings. In conflict situations, INFPs place little importance on who is right and who is wrong. They focus on the way that the conflict makes them feel, and indeed don't really care whether or not they're right. They don't want to feel badly. This trait sometimes makes them appear irrational and illogical in conflict situations. On the other hand, INFPs make very good mediators, and are typically good at solving other people's conflicts, because they intuitively understand people's perspectives and feelings, and genuinely want to help them.

INFPs are flexible and laid-back, until one of their values is violated. In the face of their value system being threatened, INFPs can become aggressive defenders, fighting passionately for their cause. When an INFP has adopted a project or job which they're interested in, it usually becomes a "cause" for them. Although they are not detail-oriented individuals, they will cover every possible detail with determination and vigor when working for their "cause".

When it comes to the mundane details of life maintenance, INFPs are typically completely unaware of such things. They might go for long periods without noticing a stain on the carpet, but carefully and meticulously brush a speck of dust off of their project booklet.

INFPs do not like to deal with hard facts and logic. Their focus on their feelings and the Human Condition makes it difficult for them to deal with impersonal judgment. They don't understand or believe in the validity of impersonal judgment, which makes them naturally rather ineffective at using it. Most INFPs will avoid impersonal analysis, although some have developed this ability and are able to be quite logical. Under stress, it's not uncommon for INFPs to mis-use hard logic in the heat of anger, throwing out fact after (often inaccurate) fact in an emotional outburst.

INFPs have very high standards and are perfectionists. Consequently, they are usually hard on themselves, and don't give themselves enough credit. INFPs may have problems working on a project in a group, because their standards are likely to be higher than other members' of the group. In group situations, they may have a "control" problem. The INFP needs to work on balancing their high ideals with the requirements of every day living. Without resolving this conflict, they will never be happy with themselves, and they may become confused and paralyzed about what to do with their lives. (this is soo completely me!!)

INFPs are usually talented writers. They may be awkard (okay, seriously? they spelled awkward wrong... i can't tell you how much that bothers me!!) and uncomfortable with expressing themselves verbally, but have a wonderful ability to define and express what they're feeling on paper. INFPs also appear frequently in social service professions, such as counselling (again... does this organization really have the 'smarts' to analyze the psychology of my personality when they spell this poorly!!!) or teaching. They are at their best in situations where they're working towards the public good, and in which they don't need to use hard logic.

INFPs who function in their well-developed sides can accomplish great and wonderful things, which they will rarely give themselves credit for. Some of the great, humanistic catalysts in the world have been INFPs.

Jungian functional preference ordering: (now i have to go research what the heck this means...)

Dominant: Introverted Feeling
Auxiliary: Extraverted Intuition
Tertiary: Introverted Sensing
Inferior: Extraverted Thinking

And not a single concussion

IT's amazing to me how often my daughter hits her head. At least three or four times a day. I know this is just a stage of childhood, and it is pretty sad to hear her crying with her little red, teary eyes, and pouty mouth, but I have to admit, it is a little humorous.
Here is a sampling of the various locations around our apartment where Reese has nearly headbutted herself into unconsciousness...

On my way

Well, I finally did it. I took steps toward getting back into school this semester. Obviously, I'm a little slow on the uptake, since the new semester probably starts very soon, but I'm hoping maybe I can start late, or something. I don't know. Maybe I will have to wait until summer. BUT, I did schedule an appointment with DBU to check out their Adult Education program. I feel like such a retard doing the Adult Education program. It makes me feel soo old, not to mention it brings up memories of those obnoxious adults who were in my classes at TCJC, raising their hand after every stinking question, because they always had something to say. And it was never important enough for them to say it.

I'm desperate to go back to school. I love being a mommy, and while I'm technically not a stay-at-home mom, because I do have a job, I am with Reese all day, whether it be at home, the office or running work errands. I feel as though I am not really accomplishing much. In a sense, I guess I feel as though there's more to do with my life, and I'm not doing it. Being a mother is tremendously satisfying, fulfilling, and heart-warming, and I enjoy every bit of it. ANd, I realize that raising a child is a huge accomplishment, so I am not just sitting around wasting my life away or anything. But, I know that inside of me, I feel a little purposeless. There's a whole side of me that is not being nurtured, and I can sense myself getting antsy - like cabin fever. I'm frustrated when I see so many of my peers who have their degrees and have successful careers, because I know that should/could be me.

I know I have an ideal situation right now... being able to work and be with my daughter 24/7. And I love that. When I think about not being with her for the sake of a career, I seriously feel tears well up behind my eyes! I know that I'm probably, in a way, right where I should be in regards to her. And for that I'm extremely grateful. But I also want to achieve something for myself. I have no idea anymore what I want to do as a career. But, I know I want to have one, and I know school is the all-important first step in that direction.

So, all that to say, THIS Thursday at 12:30, I'm driving out to BFE (DBU) to go to a "meeting" about the Adult Education Program. I'm really excited and I'm really hoping it goes well.

Christmas Day

So, I realize Christmas is over, but I wanted to post this record of our holiday for posterity. Plus, I had already written it for myspace, so I might as well just copy it over to here. But I figured I should give people a few days to read my other million blogs from December 27. =)

First off, opening presents with my hubby at home. Which doesn't take too long at this point. =) Then, back to my parents' home for cinnamon rolls, coffee, (normally we have mimosas, but I forgot to buy the champagne) and present opening between our family, which takes an obscene amount of time. My parents buy a crazy amount of gifts.

I'm not too sure about this...

You Are An ESFP

The Performer

You are a natural performer and happiest when you're entertaining others.
A great friend, you are generous, fun-loving and optimistic.
You love to laugh - and you like almost all people equally.
You accept life as it is, and you do your best to make each day fantastic.

You would make a good actor, designer, or counselor.

Christmas Eve!

So, here's the normal Christmas Eve agenda.
Christmas Eve service... followed by everyone in my family, including aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. gathering back at my mom's for dinner. Normally lasagna, or something of the non-traditional sort. Then, following dinner, we all get really loud and hyper... and I mean chanting, screaming, shrieking, any sort of racket that comes with the frenzy of over-eating a bunch of fattening food you never let yourself eat, and getting new stuff you didn't have to pay for. Then we open presents from aunts, uncles, cousins... extended family. This normally doesn't end until at least 10 or 11, which usually is followed by movies, baking or just hanging out until we all decide to go home and go to bed. This year was a bit different, as Niles' family was in town. Their holiday tradition is somewhat different from the Cole family. A wee bit more laid-back. And, shall I say, quieter. =)
They usually go to Olive Garden for Christmas Eve dinner, and then go home to open their one present to each other. That's it! Much different from the normal chaos and insanity that I'm used to. But also much appreciated in these past couple years!!
Since the Holsingers were in town this year for the holidays, we decided to go ahead and do the Olive Garden tradition, and end up at my parents' house around 9 or so to join the crazies.
Here are the first pics from Reesey's first Christmas Eve

Just as a sidebar... When we Holsingers arrived at my parents' home, everyone was already seated, waiting for us to get there to open presents. As we trickled in, my entire family started screaming and clapping. Needless to say, I think Niles' family was a little shell-shocked!! I, on the other hand, jumped right into the screaming pit and started dancing and screaming like everyone else. It was awesome.
But here's Reese, and my cousin's daughter, Kiana, sitting on my dad's lap. He is the ultimate Grandpa.
